Can I put a trailer hitch on my Ford Taurus?
Can I install a trailer hitch on an ’02 or ’03 Ford Taurus SES (V6) and haul a small trailer w/ my motorcycle around? Motorcycle weighs roughly 400 lbs.
The car certainly has the power to haul a small trailer, though Taurus tranmissions are pretty notorious for being rather poorly designed and prone to failure at 60,000 to 80,000 miles, and towing something may accelerate that a bit. As an added precaution you may want to add a transmission cooler.
Also bear in mind that, as your Taurus is a front-wheel drive car and the trailer will be adding load on the non-drive rear axle the rear end may get a little squirrely. Take it easy on the high speed turns.
