Charolais Bulls

Trip to Italy – Looking for the Real Cowboys? Try Maremma
That's right. Forget all the old Spaghetti Western clichés. CAN You still see real cowboys. . . Italy!
The Maremma is part of the western region bordering Tuscany Lazio and Umbria to the south east. While the rest of Tuscany is to some degree is explored more and more commercialized, the Maremma remains little known to many tourists and often are not even covered many of the popular guidebooks. For it is less crowded, more natural and cheaper to visit than many other parts of Tuscany and Italy in general. If you are looking to have a travel experience that is a real slice of Italian life and history, it is your place.
The Maremma in the past has been a particularly mosquito infested their husbands from the rest of Italy. But in ancient times, the Etruscans were able in the drain the swamps and create lush farmland given plenty of wheat, grapes and olive on the other part of Italy. When the Etruscans disappeared mysteriously, the Maremma reverted to its wild roots. It was not until Mussolini drained swamps again, that Maremma came back to life. Today is home to some of Tuscany and Italy's most magnificent beaches, a Natural Park teeming with game and lush vegetation, natural healing springs and some of Tuscany more intriguing hilltop town. If you are a history buff, a slow food follower or someone out there is something for you here in Maremma.
Now, back to the cowboys. The modern day butteri proud descendant of an ancient race of people who have tended the cattle Maremman unique for centuries. To understand butteri, you should understand maremman Bull. Unlike in Chiana Val bistecca or used for the charolais, the bull maremman proud and noble bears the stamp of an ancient and greedy. The relationship between a buterro and its mountains are also very different from our American cowboy. They treat their horses with a very fine hand, with Only the tiniest of spurs and a special bite that does not hurt their teeth. The horses themselves are a unique breed, quite robust and extremely reliable in any situation. Do butteri saddle is basically a "scafardo" built on a wooden bow of him. And its most important tool is "l'uncino" a stick with a small hook on the end used for everything from the opening of a latched gate to picking up a hat off the ground.
Now the basic role of the rugged men in their vests and fedoras is to preserve the heritage and traditions of buterri. They put on shows for the public and even to conduct an annual "transhumance" moving the herd from a dreary pasture with a better one across the Tuscan countryside. And YOU can be A buterro yourself joining them for two exciting days!
Just because we are talking about the wild side of Maremma, does not mean that we can accommodate a small luxury. After all, all riding and herding, a person is likely to use a good soak in warm, mineral water and a massage, right? That's the amazing part of the Maremma is all of that too. It is home to some of the oldest, most natural healing spring for all Italian. The Italians are very proud of their traditions thermal spa and make the "water" when they can. The mineral laden water is actually heated deep area near the volcano Monte Amiata. A visit to the thermal spas of Saturnia are specific matter what You are sick.
The food and wine of the Maremma is strange as well. Wild boar, pheasant and other types of wild game as well as fresh seafood specialties are served at each place home and restaurant depending at the time. mushrooms and chestnuts are plentiful as well – the Fall there are festivals devoted to each other. Wines produced here since Etruscan times. One red in particular from the village of Scansano, Morellino Scansano is gaining in popularity. Is made primarily from Sangiovese grapes and is a cousin to the better known Brunello and Super Tuscans from nearby Tuscany. If You enjoy good food prepared in it's most simple and traditional way with fresh ingredients from the earth, it is reason enough to fall in love in Maremma.
Beaches and some of the finest in all of Italy, favored by Italians and European travelers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland in particular. Here you can find the secluded white sand coves and black sand beaches that seem to stretch past the horizon. The emerald and turquoise waters of Tirenno Mar – Tyrrhenian Sea – forms a spectacular coastline. Sunset picnic on the shore is an experience to live in your memory forever. Paradiso.
I could go on and on about all treasures of this most unique part of Tuscany but I think I'll leave some of it for you to discover yourself. "Maremma's beauty capture your heart, its few touch your soul. "
